This Victorian timber home was built in the 1890’s. The original slates installed and still on the roof were English ” Delaboles “.
There are still many period homes around Melbourne with these slates on their roof but they are now reaching the end of their serviceable lifespan.
The slate tiles on this home were starting to leak consistently from absorbing water and also suffering from flaking and delaminating. The owners decided a new slate roof to match as closely as possible the originals was the best course of action to take at this stage to prevent further internal damage to plaster and paint.
Out of the options for quality roof slates we showed them , they chose the Del Carmen Ultra roofing slates.
These slates are an excellent choice for period homes around Melbourne. The look and color are very close to the old original Delabole slates and retain the character and integrity of the Victorian era.
As with all our slate re-roofs we also installed new insulation sarking, new oregon slate battens, new metal valleys and roll top ridge capping. It really is false economy not to install these materials if the home is getting new roofing slates.
This slate roof should be good to go for another 100 years at least with very minimal maintenance. Good peace of mind for Melbourne’s seemingly increasing tropical type downpours.
